After about 18 months of dismal results, for some reason I found the motivation to give it one last shot. I began to do some deep soul searching about what I was really trying to accomplish and how I was going about it.

Aging With Grace

Strength, endurance, flexibility and balance loss are four areas seniors should be concerned with that affect aging. Sarcopenia is the fancy term scientists have given to describe loss of muscle, strength and quality of tissue often seen in older adults. Some experts have suggested that muscle mass declines about 4% each decade from age 25 to 50.

No matter how old you are, exercise can improve your quality of life and you don’t have to spend a lot of time doing it to see and feel improvements. Three areas to focus on are:

Endurance: As we age, we could lose aerobic fitness and experts believe this often contributes to reduced mobility in daily life.

Flexibility: Joints change with age and this can lead to stiffness, decreased range of motion and more injuries

Balance: Each year, hospitals see over 300,000 patients for broken hips due to falling. Balance exercises can help you avoid injuries from falls and keep you independent and mobile.

Strength Training Ideas:

• Lift weights for all muscle groups (chest, back, shoulders, arms, abs and legs) at least 2 non-consecutive days each week
• Start with no weights or light weights—you can use dumbbells, machines and/or resistance bands
• Do each exercise for at least 1 set of 10-15 repetitions. Use enough resistance that you can only do the exercise 15 times. If you can do more, you should increase your weights.
• Progress by adding more sets (with rest in between) and/or increasing the weights each week
• Focus on having good form for each exercise
• Be sure to warm up with light exercise before lifting weights

If you’ve never lifted weights before, you may want to work with personal trainer to learn the proper way to lift. Make sure your trainer has experience in working with seniors! If personal training isn’t an option, you might want to use videos to see proper technique and to get an idea of what a strength training routine looks like. If you have access to “Fit T.V. there are a vast array of programs available in all areas of exercise.

There are many forms of exercise from playing ping pong to lifting weights. As one gets older certain exercises are eliminated for individuals with health limitations. I used to love to jog. Because of a deteriorating disk in my lower back, I am unable to run. I have replaced running with using an elliptical machine. I use it 6 days a week for at least 35 minutes. I have replaced weight lifting with elastic bands to keep my arms from being flabby. I do use light weights, no more than 10 pounds, for isometric exercise. The most important exercise is pushing myself away from the dinner table in time.

The Nintendo game, Wii has given older adults another avenue for exercise. Exercising and having fun is very important for older adults. Wii offers bowling, golf, boxing, darts, shuffle- board just to show a few. People in nursing homes are getting up off the couches and even organizing tournaments. To take part in any exercise for older adults should consult with their doctor. Exercise keeps you young by using your mind and body. Exercise also fights depression and assists in interpersonal relations.

Some Tips to prevent you from becoming a victim of a financial fraud:

• Do not sign the back of your credit cards, instead put “photo ID required”.
  

• When you are writing checks to pay on your credit card accounts, do not put the complete account number. Instead just put the last fourt numbers.  The credit card company knows the rest of the number and any one who might be handling your check as it passes through all the check processing channels wont have access to it.
  

• Put your work phone number on your checks instead of your home phone.  If you have a PO box, use that instead of your home address. If you do not have a PO box, use your work address. Also, do not have your social security number printed on your checks, if you do that anyone can get it.
  

• Place the contents of your wallet on a photo copy machine, do both sides of each license, credit card ect.  That way, you will know what you have in your wallet if it is stolen. You will also have all of your credit card numbers along with the 1800 numbers to cancel your accounts.
  

• Immediately call the 3 national credit reporting organizations to place a fraud alert on your name and also call the Social Security fraud line number. The alert means any company that checks your credit knows your information was stolen, and they have to contact you by phone to authorize new credit.

Ladies, Don’t Let Your Guard Down

Ladies, don’t ever let your guard down. Here are some tips that may make a difference if your life. Don’t let yourself become a victim!

Before going out for a night on the town, prepare yourself and be in your “power”. A lot of things can happen to you, so the best thing is to mentally prepare yourself for any situation.  For example, as you are walking to your car, think of different situations that could arise and how you would combat them.  If someone grabbed you as you were putting something in your trunk what would you do?  Get that adrenalin running, quick and get mad.

Yell for help! Many attackers will leave if you attract attention, so yell “Fire,” “Call 911″ or “Help,” knock over a trash can or do anything else you can to make some noise. Another idea is to keep a bottle of Lysol in your trunk.  Spray your attacker in the face.

Some ways to use your body are to kick your attacker in the shins as hard as you can. Flail your elbows around.  Use an open palm when trying to hurt your attacker, meaning hit with your palm open, using the heel of your hand under their chin, going upwards. If you can do this, you are effectively performing a brachial stun and that can get you loose so you can use the tools around to fend off your assailant.

Don’t punch, as this can break your fingers. Instead, use your fist like a hammer and come down on the attacker’s head or collarbone. Use anything you can as a weapon. This could be your purse, an ashtray, keys (keep one in between your fingers when you strike), belt buckle, brief case, hairspray, book, or bottle. Keep your hands in front of your face to protect it.

Practice a defensive stance in the mirror at your house. Weak foot forward. Bend your knees to get your balance. Use your knee or foot (the bottom of your flat foot) to kick the attacker in the groin. Poke your thumbs into the attacker’s eyes. Use your elbow to hit your attacker in the face, chin, or throat, which can damage his airway.

Strike at the most vulnerable body parts, which are the:

• Eyes
• Nose
• Knees
• Groin
• Ears
• Throat/Neck (front or back)
• Stomp down on the attacker’s foot with your heel.

If you are not able to scream keep your mouth closed with your teeth clenched to protect your jaw (as opposed to leaving your mouth open). If you are small make yourself smaller by crouching. Avoid facing a larger opponent head-on, instead use your size to dodge punches and use your strongest body parts (your elbows, your legs, your knees) against the attacker’s weakest areas (face, groin, knees, throat). Push your thumbs into the hollow of the attacker’s neck (below the Adam’s apple on men).

That’s using your head! Use your head as a weapon. To do so, quickly bang your head against their chin or face (this works well if you’re grabbed from behind). If necessary, use your teeth and bite your attacker (this could potentially transmit a disease to you, if the attacker has one, but it’s worth the risk if it saves your life). Do anything you can to get loose.  Visualize different scenarios and how you would defend yourself.

Remember, always be on your guard and if it doesn’t seem right, go back the way you came and get help. You may only have one chance, make good decisions and if you find yourself in a bad situation, remember how you have practiced to defend yourself.

So put on your lip stick and have a great night. Stay in your power and keep yourself safe!

How To Set Your Business Objectives When Starting Your New

Home business success is a journey, just as our life is a journey, learn to make it an exciting and educational one that will eventually pay off in ways you never even dreamed of.  A true home business success requires effort, just as any other type of venture you may pursue.  Moreover, your home business success may be directly tied to how much thought and action you give to it. One way to insure successful results in your home business is to set specific business objectives and goals.

Business objectives are the stated, measurable targets of how to achieve your business aims. The objectives should state the goals of the organization and give the business a clearly defined target.  Objectives for business can include anything from “Be the top-ranked provider of management consulting services” to “Serve the best hamburgers in town”, these are both based on results.  Because writing business objectives is neither a standard nor well-defined practice in the workplace, the list of objectives, place the business objective before the learning objectives.

The objectives must:

• be focused on a result, not an activity
• be consistent
• be specific
• be measurable
• be related to time
• be attainable

Strategic planning and decision processes should end with objectives and a road map of ways to achieve those objectives.  When we prepare goals in observable, measurable terms, we call these goals objectives.  Some business objectives state a specific business target and a timeline for achieving that target.

You have started your direct sales business, your business is growing and sales have started adding up – congratulations!  The next step is to start building your sales team by recruiting other direct sales representatives.  Building a sales team will boost your confidence and feeling of accomplishment by helping others to achieve success.  Do not forget, their success will boost your revenue.

• Some of the most effective ways to recruit are available right at your fingertips.  Online recruiting can be as simple as adding an extra line or two to your email signature.  You should already have something on your signature about your product and your website address. Why not add “contact me for an income earning opportunity” or something to that effect?
• Subscribe to email lists that may be interested in your product or opportunity.  Your email signature will let them know about the products you sell and the recruitment opportunity.  You can be your helpful, social self and enjoy interacting with people on the list.
• Online groups and website bulletin boards are another place you can meet potential recruits.  There are many websites and online groups dedicated to work at home moms.  Join these and let others know about the fantastic opportunity you discovered and how it has been advantageous to you.
• Having your own website is essential to increased sales and an excellent resource for recruiting.  Ask visitors to register, so you can start a database of potential customers and recruits.  Ask registering users if they are interested in an income opportunity and contact them, as soon as possible, if they are.
• Send out newsletters to registered users in your database.  In addition to sending out product information, tell them your story and how your business has improved your life.   Let them know you are available to help them achieve their goals.
• Get your name out on the web by writing articles.  After all, you are an expert on your product.  Mention your website and, if possible, add a link to it. The more links you have to your website, the higher it crawls in the search engines and the more visitors you’ll get.
• One of your best resources for recruits are your favorite customers.  They already love the products and have some knowledge about the company.  Nudge them in the right direction by explaining how much they can save by selling.

Do not forget the most important rule about recruiting.  Talk about your products, your business, and your success.  Tell people, both in person and on the web, how you started; where you are going, and how they can get join in.  Tell everyone what you do and why you love it. Your enthusiasm can be contagious.
